Establishment of Environmental Flow in a Physically Obstructed Tidal River

Abstract
The River Bakkhali is a major tidal river in Bangladesh. The estuarine zone related to this river is a suitable breeding zone for aquatic flora and fauna. The irrigation method used in Bakkhali rubber dam is flooding and wild flooding that cause a water loss of about 50 to 60 percent. However, through farmers training and demonstration on "On Farm Water Management" technology, 40 percent of applied water can be saved. Depending on the species abundance and their migration pattern in the Bakkhali River as well as concerning the seasonality of dam operation, the giant fresh water prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii, or known as `golda' fish in Bangladesh) has been taken as an indicator species in this study. This paper proposes the construction of a bypass channel that may provide 2.19 m3/sec flows during dry season to ensure the environmental flow. Also, the use of a one-way foot valve has been proposed to resist saline water intrusion.
