Abstract
Dans l’introduction à son ouvrage, Patrick Modiano, Alan Morris présente l’ambiguïté comme « la qualité déterminante de l’univers modianesque ». Sur le plan herméneutique, cette problématique de l’incertitude affecte aussi le lecteur et sous-tend les intentions métadiscursives du roman de 2007, Dans le café de la jeunesse perdue. Le roman est une tentative d’accéder à la vérité d’une jeune femme : Jacqueline, surnommée Louki. Mais quel genre littéraire donnerait le plus satisfaction ? Roman policier, roman réaliste, biographie, autofiction ? Comment saisir son image, comment la faire remonter à la surface : voilà un des enjeux du texte. Pour les quatre narrateurs sur la piste de Jacqueline/Louki, il s’agit de combler des lacunes biographiques, auto-biographiques ou policières. Le roman de Modiano se construit dans cette tension qui oppose l’attirance suscitée par l’image de la jeune femme et la résistance qu’elle présente à son émergence. Cette muse parfaite accrochant la lumière mieux que les autres, est « la figure » qui, selon la définition de Bertrand Gervais, devient « un signe complexe hautement signifiant » à l’origine du processus créateur.
