Non-planar motion experiments were conducted on 65° and 55° delta wings in the IAR 15x20 in. water tunnel using the Orbital-Platform Epicyclical Coning apparatus (OPLEC). The models were tested in steady coning motion at different bank angles, coning rates and angles of attack up to the post-stall regime. The experimental results reveal non-linear aerodynamic characteristics at high incidence. The coning rate affects the aerodynamic loads, especially the rolling moment, which exhibits severe nonlinearities at certain angle-of-attack range. Moreover, the stability of the rolling moment was found to be a function of angle of attack, roll angle and coning rate. Detailed analysis shows that these characteristics are mainly due to vortex effects, in the form of either movement of vortex breakdown or spanwise displacement of the vortex trajectory.
