Abstract
Thomas McCarthy has written an exceedingly learned book which makes a major contribution to our understanding of intellectual culture in twelfth-century Europe. As his descriptive title makes clear, McCarthy takes music in the Salian period as his primary focus and demonstrates the role it played in the cathedral and especially monastic culture of Germany, specifically in Reichenau, Regensburg, Hirsau and other southern institutions. Although this book no doubt will satisfy the serious musicologist with its erudite discussion of such matters as the double protus and tetrardus function of D and d or the plagal version of deuterus, McCarthy's interest in the broader place of music theory in central Europe will make his work valuable to any scholar interested in the intellectual currents of the scholastic period or the history of the liberal arts curriculum in general. Among his most notable achievements is in demonstrating so cogently the rich and sophisticated scholarly activities in Germany during the eleventh and twelfth centuries; he thus adds to a growing body of research which seeks to redress the historiographical predilection for studying scholastic France at the expense of other areas of Europe with their own intellectual traditions and pursuits.
