Abstract
Le climat et la politique ont été liés ensemble depuis Aristote. Avec Montesquieu, Ibn Khaldûn ou Watsuji, un certain déterminisme climatique est imputé au caractère d’une nation. La rupture de la modernité fait du climat un objet de connaissance scientifique qui, au xx e siècle permet de documenter, malgré les controverses, les changements climatiques liés à l’industrialisation. L’un comme l’autre mettent en péril la survie des êtres humains et des écosystèmes. Les éthiques du climat sont donc à la recherche d’une nouvelle relation avec la biosphère ou Gaïa. Pour certains, avec l’absence d’accords politiques, c’est le début des catastrophes inéluctables. Pour d’autres, l’Anthropocène qui fusionne dorénavant l’histoire humaine à l’histoire naturelle ouvre sur l’action technique. Le débat entre le déterminisme du climat et la liberté humaine est relancé.
