On-Line Satellite Ice Data for Marine Operations - Status and Perspectives

Abstract
Ship routing, research campaigns and offshore activities in ice-covered areas require information on the ice regime in support of safe navigation. This is especially necessary either where vessels are in transit or where the activities are performed under dynamic ice conditions, as they are experience for example in the regime of the East Greenland and Labrador Currents. This paper deals with the technical possibilities to receive ice information on board of vessels or on offshore platforms. This paper reviews the technical developments since the 70ies to transmit and/or receive different ice information products such as ice charts and/or various forms of satellite images and products. The most recent transmission techniques are highlighted as well as the relevant ice information products. Results of experiences on board of the German RV Polarstern and GS Neuwerk are presented, with the latter using ERS-2 Radar images.
