Abstract
Since the establishment of Sino-South Korean diplomatic relations in 1992, the government of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture has actively promoted interactions between its Korean population and South Korea. Additionally, it has emphasized its ethnic Korean features in order to attract the attention of the global Korean community. This strategy can be regarded as having been relatively successful. Ethnic Korean foreign investments have boosted Yanbian's economic development and restructuring. In 2005, three-fourths of Yanbian's foreign direct investment (FDI) projects were from South Korea.2 Moreover, the export of labour to Korean-owned companies all over the world has generated huge flows of remittances into Yanbian. In 2006, migrant remittances are said to have reached US$1 billion.3
