Abstract

At present most petroleum products for use by communities and mines in the Canadian Arctic are shipped in from offshore refineries during the open water season. The paper will look at indigenous energy resources, particularly gas fields that may be tapped by a Gas to Liquids (GTL) plant designed to produce a slate of products including diesel, Jet and gasoline. Current technology in this area has advanced to the point where such plants can be highly competitive with conventional sources. Ship design and propulsion technology, the Double Acting Tanker (DAT), has also advanced to where year round delivery can be considered with vessels that can be competitive in open water conditions. The paper will look at the potential for such a plant in the high Arctic, and the impact it might have on the cost of community support and mining operations.
