Abstract
As a result of on-going slope movements that were seriously impacting a section of highway, a trial deep soil mixing project was initiated by the Ministry of Transportation in the interior of British Columbia to investigate alternatives to retain the sliding soil mass. Prior to field work, a laboratory test program was instituted to create a database of Unconfined Compressive Strength [UCS] for a variety of mix designs utilizing the soil from the subject site. Results of the UCS tests on reconstituted specimens of varying silt, sand, cement and total water content were then used to design the required mix ratio to meet the 14 days, 2 MPa UCS criteria. The results are compared to published literature, and the relative influence of test variables affecting the field strength gain is reported.
