Abstract
En 1867, lorsque les Pères de la Confédération s’entendent sur les principes qui donneront naissance au Canada, les autochtones sont absents. Ces derniers n’auront guère plus de voix au chapitre dans les décennies suivantes, si bien qu’ils semblent dès lors marginalisés, tombés dans l’oubli collectif. Si la période de la Nouvelle-France leur a fait une place dans l’historiographie, que sait-on vraiment de l’histoire sociale et économique des autochtones du Québec depuis le XIXe siècle ? Que sait-on de la nature des rapports qu’ils entretiennent avec la société nationale à la même époque ? Peu de chose. Alors que l’imaginaire populaire tend à dépeindre les autochtones comme étant confinés dans leurs réserves et réduits à dépendre du gouvernement fédéral pour assurer leur subsistance, Claude Gélinas présente un portrait beaucoup plus nuancé de leur situation, en faisant ressortir notamment leur degré élevé de mobilité, d’autonomie et de participation dans la société et l’économie nationales. Il tend à confirmer une constante historique, à savoir que l’incompréhension entre autochtones et non-autochtones, au Québec comme au Canada, relève davantage de l’idéologie que des rapports sociaux.
