Abstract
Abstract Empire, the use of military, political, or economic power to deprive or abridge people's control over their own governance, sovereignty, resources, and even bodies, is inextricably linked to trade or commerce, the exchange of goods within and across the borders of a state. Imperial efforts to control trade and commerce have ranged from the brutal conquest and outright expropriation of land, resources, and labor to the mutually beneficial acceptance of shared norms, values, and laws. Trade and commerce became particularly important in the creation of European empires during the Early Modern and Modern periods. Debates over the ends and methods to govern commerce in an imperial context have played a pivotal role in political thought and contributed to the emergence of economics as a discipline. As a consequence, empire's relation to commerce sometimes appears coterminous with empire itself, as the relations between trade and dominion help define one another.
