Abstract
One hundred years after the passage of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act, Britain is undergoing a major constitutional reassessment. The Blair government’s constitutional reform programme has transformed Britain’s political landscape, and in remarkably short order. This article runs through the changes one by one, assessing their significance, and wherever possible drawing parallels with the Australian experience. The article notes how closely Britain marches in step with Australia (as well as Canada and New Zealand), but in constitutional matters the United Kingdom has fallen behind. The dramatic changes of the last four years can be viewed as a process of rapid catching up. Britain has more to learn constitutionally from the former Dominions than to impart.
