Abstract
L’image de la vieillesse dans les sociétés occidentales est traditionnellement présentée comme étant associée à la dégradation, à la maladie, au handicap et à la mort. Le dernier âge de la vie serait ainsi conçu comme un déclin général, touchant indifféremment le corps et l’esprit. Une étude portant sur les représentations sociales de la vieillesse auprès de jeunes adultes invalide cette hypothèse. L’analyse des interviews laisse apparaître une conception de la vieillesse qui dissocie le corps et l’esprit, en leur attribuant des logiques propres. Alors que le corps, par sa détermination biologique, est perçu comme inéluctablement voué à la dégénérescence, le devenir de l’esprit est négociable.
