Abstract
This article presents the findings of a companion survey conducted in conjunction with the Canadian Historical Association’s latest survey on the status of women in the historical profession in Canada. The survey, conducted among approximately 240 historical researchers (HRS) employed in the federal civil service, represents the first effort to assess the status and position of women in public history. Despite differences in the type of work performed, women public historians shared much in common with university-employed counterparts. Women indicated their interest in the issue by returning questionnaires at a much higher rater than did men, and many expressed concerns about juggling work and family responsibilities. When compared with their male colleagues, women public historians tended to be younger and were more likely to hold positions at a lower level on the hierarchy, while holding comparable educational attainments.
