Abstract
IntroductionL’existence d’un juge supérieur du comté est très ancienne en Provence, en fait dès les comtes catalans. La première mention d’un juge mage date de 1179 avec un certain Garcia de Resa. Ce titre est cependant rare à cette époque. Il alterne avec celui de juge de Provence (judex Provincie), titre qui apparaît de plus en plus souvent dans les sources à partir de 1222 avec Romée de Villeneuve, puis Augier de Grasse en 1233 et Raymond d’Hyères de 1235 à 1245.
