Abstract
Zola, on le sait, réprouve une imagination livrée à elle-même. Une remarque polémique parue dans la presse en 1866 sert de point de départ à une réflexion sur le statut de cette faculté dans la tradition réaliste. Le discrédit zolien radicalise l’opposition entre les usages déréglés de la fiction et les enjeux épistémologiques d’une littérature concernée par le réel. La question est alors d’actualité si l’on en juge par les contrepoints apportés par Balzac, Hugo, Baudelaire, Flaubert, moins réticents sur le principe d’une contribution active de l’imagination au sein même du projet réaliste. Zola précisera sa poétique dans Le roman expérimental (1879). On retient l’idée d’une « déchéance de l’imagination » mais deux nuances essentielles tempèrent ce postulat naturaliste : traquée au sein de l’inventio, l’imagination est recyclée dans la dispositio et l’elocutio ; elle est ensuite hypostasiée dans ce que Zola appelle « le sens du réel », avatar du réalisme tempéramentiel, d’origine romantique, défendu dans Mes haines. En définitive, la position de Zola, quand on la contextualise, qu’on la compare et qu’on la relativise, n’est pas si éloignée d’autres revendications en faveur du réalisme artistique.
