Dans cet article, consacré à l’évolution du libre-échange dans les Amériques, l’auteur montre, dans une première partie, que diverses structures d’espaces marchands se sont développées plus tôt et selon des modèles plus variés, entre les pays d’Amérique latine, qu’entre ceux d’Amérique du Nord. Dans une deuxième partie, il souligne que, depuis les années 1990, la tendance de cette évolution est de renforcer ces espaces marchands régionaux, tout en cherchant à établir, pour la première fois, une vaste zone de libre-échange continentale qui s’étendra de la Terre de Baffin à la Terre de Feu. Quelle en sera la structure ? À cet égard, quel sera le rôle de l’ALENA, en raison de sa clause d’accession ? Quel sera celui de la Zone de libre-échange des Amériques (ZLEA), que se sont engagés à réaliser d’ici l’an 2005 les 34 pays du continent, suite au Sommet de Miami de décembre 1994 ?
