Abstract
Mammon de Robert Alexis est une mise en scène du désir. Dans une fresque ambitieuse qui se veut l’aventure réfléchie de toutes les aventures, Alexis revient d’une manière plus concertée à l’aspiration qui habite ses romans précédents : vivre à la hauteur de la véritable exigence du désir. À l’instar de la jeune journaliste que le richissime Moreau invite dans son château, le lecteur pénètre dans le récit d’Alexis pour être initié peu à peu au matérialisme du désir, à l’égoïsme et au sacrifice qu’il exige dans une nature qui renaît sans cesse au sein de sa destruction même. Davantage qu’une histoire à lire en esthète ou en technicien, l’écriture alexienne se veut ainsi performative : il s’agit de rejoindre une communauté aristocratique dont le roman est la métaphore et dont l’exigence habite puissamment, selon Alexis, chacun de ses lecteurs.
