Johannes Buckler was de officiele naam van wel de beroemdste en beruchtste rover uit de Hunsruck. ‘Schinderhannes’, zoals hij in zijn tijd werd genoemd, hield daar huis in de late 18de eeuw. 200 jaar later gaf de legendarische bandiet zijn naam aan een spectaculaire fossielenvondst in de Devonische Hunsrucklei. Schinderhannes bartelsi is een uitgestorven geleedpotige, die ongeveer 400 miljoen jaar geleden in de Hunsruckschiefer-zee op jacht ging. Met de ontdekking van dit fossiel werd een brug geslagen tussen de 500 miljoen jaar oude Cambrische vindplaatsen in Canada, USA, Australie, Polen en China, en de ongeveer 100 miljoen jaar jongere Devonische vindplaats in Duitsland. Hij verbindt ook een groep uiterst primitieve geleedpotigen, de zogenaamde Anomalocariden, met de overige geleedpotigen. Onlangs werd dit fossiel onderzocht in een samenwerking tussen het Steinmann-Institut, afdeling paleontologie, van de Universiteit Bonn en de Yale Universiteit in New Haven (USA).
