Abstract
Founded in 1833 by a noble family from Ardeche, the Lafarge Group constitutes today a good example of a global company. Like Saint-Gobain, Lafarge has become a major player in the building materials sector. Its history offers a good picture of the succession of the « three globalizations ». The first stage, between 1964 and 1945, was the period of internalization, begun essentially before World War One, then strengthened during the inter-war years, notably thanks to cartels. The second stage was the period of multinationalization, characterized, from 1947 to 1974, by strong growth, the transition to the managerial firm and the rise of Canadian activities. The third stage was globalization. It includes three aspects : progressive conquest of the European market, access to leadership in North America, and layout in Far Eastern countries, thanks to the successive take-over of General Portland, Coppee, Redland and Blue Circle.
