Abstract
Retraçant les principales causes du « désenchantement » du monde occidental, cet article suggère qu’avec le basculement de l’Occident dans le christianisme, puis dans la modernité laïque et rationnelle, ce n’est pas tant que le « sacré » serait disparu de notre monde; ce serait plutôt nous, Occidentaux modernes, qui aurions simplement perdu la capacité de le percevoir et de l’expérimenter. En privilégiant comme il l’a fait une pensée rationnelle de type scientifique et technique, l’Occident s’est en ce sens appauvri d’une autre façon de sentir, de penser et de vivre le monde, une façon essentiellement symbolique, qui rendait notamment possible l’expérience du sacré (et ses prolongements religieux). En corollaire, c’est dans la mesure où l’Occident moderne retrouve pour ainsi dire le « mode d’emploi » de cette pensée symbolique qu’il semble pouvoir retrouver — comme plusieurs indices de notre temps tendraient à le laisser penser — une nouvelle disponibilité à une expérience du sacré.
