Abstract
Dans la société esclavagiste brésilienne, la liberté de se marier était l’un des rares droits consentis aux esclaves et, en principe, garanti par la justice ecclésiastique. Les causes de mariage du tribunal du diocèse de Rio de Janeiro au tournant du xviiie siècle permettent à l’historien de voir comment ce droit était concrètement appliqué par l’institution ecclésiastique, comment les maîtres s’en accommodaient et comment les esclaves en usaient. À travers ces archives judiciaires se font jour les trajectoires d’hommes et de femmes obscurs – au double sens de sans renommée et de basané : Indiens, Pardos (Métis) et Pretos (Noirs), des personnes vouées habituellement au silence des sources. L’article vise à restituer leur itinéraire dans leur fluidité et leur complexité, à faire entendre les voix de ces acteurs subalternes, tout en cherchant à comprendre la place et la signification du mariage dans ces vies d’esclaves.
