Au début du XXème siècle, la représentation littéraire québécoise couvrait l’ensemble de la zone habitée – la plaine du Saint-Laurent –, mais il aura fallu quelques décennies pour voir émerger trois régions ouvertes depuis peu – ou en passe de le devenir – à la colonisation : l’Abitibi, la Sagamie (Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean), et la Côte-Nord. C’était et c’est toujours dans l’ordre des choses, la naissance d’une vie littéraire étant tributaire des infrastructures culturelles qu’une population décide de se donner. Nous posons ici l’hypothèse que, concurremment à la mise en place de ces équipements de base, le Département d’études littéraires de l’Université du Québec à Montréal aura joué un rôle non négligeable dans l’éclosion, au cours des trente dernières années, d’une littérature des régions ouverte sur le monde. Approche sociohistorique pour mieux déployer la carte.
