Abstract
Eskers are linear landforms made up of glaciofluvial sand and gravel. The eskers of the MRC d’Abitibi were deposited in deep proglacial meltwaters and were later covered, totally or in part, by clay laid down in glacial Lake Ojibway. This mode of sedimentation created large aquifers, that supply a water of exceptional quality to a large part of the population. Preliminary results of geological and hydrogeological studies, planned over a 5 year period and undertaken in 2003, are presented in this paper. The main objectives of these studies are to increase our knowledge of the aquifer potential of eskers on a regional basis, of their internal structure, of the dynamics of the groundwater systems and of the water chemistry in order to properly manage and protect the resource.
