Exploité depuis l’Antiquité, l’or de Transylvanie constitue l’une des richesses minières les plus importantes de Roumanie. La région de Roşia Montană a été l’un des centres majeurs d’extraction de l’or, mais l’épuisement des filons accessibles a entraîné un long déclin qui fait de cette région l’une des plus pauvres de Roumanie. Depuis la fin du régime communiste, un nouveau projet minier dirigé par une société canadienne a été proposé. Mais ce projet de grande ampleur qui prévoit le creusement de grandes exploitations à ciel ouvert et l’utilisation de traitements du minerai au cyanure se heurte à une opposition résolue d’une partie de la population locale, soutenue par de nombreuses organisations non gouvernementales. Face au projet minier que la société canadienne présente comme la seule opportunité de développement économique d’une région très pauvre, les opposants défendent l’option d’une autre forme de développement durable, reposant sur l’exploitation des ressources touristiques de la région.
