Abstract
La Cite nationale de l’histoire de l’immigration est tout a la fois un musee national, une mediatheque, un espace de decouvertes, d’expositions et d’expression des arts vivants. La creation de la Cite est une reponse a « une forte demande de la societe, illustree par les nombreuses initiatives associatives qui ont emerge a partir de la fin des annees 1980 et n’ont cesse de se multiplier. Un rapport est remis au Premier ministre en novembre 2001 par Driss El Yazami et Remy Schwartz. Engagement de l’Etat sur ce projet qui s’est traduit par la lettre de mission du Premier ministre a Jacques Toubon en mars 2003, la mission de prefiguration s’est conclue par la remise d’un rapport en mai 2004 et a ete suivie par l’annonce immediate en juillet 2004 de la mise en œuvre de ce nouvel etablissement. Il faut a ce sujet souligner l’engagement tout a fait exceptionnel de l’Etat dans un projet de musee national a caractere social et politique. Jusqu’alors les grands projets presidentiels concernaient des musees d’art. L’ouverture au public en octobre 2007 du musee national de l’histoire et des cultures de l’immigration marque la premiere etape de fonctionnement de la Cite La rehabilitation du bâtiment confiee a Patrick Bouchain s’achevera en 2009, avec l’ouverture au public de la mediatheque.
