Abstract
Patrick Hayman, born 1915 in London, has lived for 12 years in New Zealand, here he started his career as a painter. He returned to England in 1947, and since then had seven one-man shows, the most recent in 1973 at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. This year he had two exhibitions in Canada. Apart from some years spent in Cornwall, London has been and is his home. Apart from painting, he writes and illustrates poetry. In 1958 he founded and edited a journal. The Painter and Sculptor, which continued for five years and circulated in many countries. It aimed at advancing “new and unfashionable ideas”.—The following extracts are taken from a work in progress, comprising a series of autobiographical writings.
