El 19 de noviembre de 1965 se publicó en la revista científica Science, una de las revistas de mas prestigio en el mundo científico, un artículo de revisión y opinión titulado: “Pain mechanisms: a new theory”, en el que los autores, Ronald Melzack y Patrick Wall, exponían una nueva interpretación de los mecanismos del dolor. Este artículo tuvo y sigue teniendo un impacto considerable entre los profesionales que estudiamos los mecanismos del dolor y sus tratamientos, hasta tal punto que es considerado como uno de los hitos fundamentales de nuestros conocimientos sobre el dolor.
