Objective:To assess the ability of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) antibody to prevent postoperative abdominal adhesion formation in mice.Methods:30 BALB/c mice were randomly divided into two groups: anti-IL-1β group ( n =15) and control group ( n =15). After an identical peritoneal injury operation, mice were treated intraperitoneally with either IL-1β antibody or normal saline at the time of abdominal closure. The mice were killed 20 days after operation , the abdominal incisions and the development of intraabdominal adhesions were observed. Adhesion scores were obtained based on an overall assessment of the adhesion extent, position and types.Results:The adhesion scores (1.22± 0.35 ) of anti-IL-1β group were significantly lower than that of control group (2.31±0.57). The occurrence rate of grade 2-3 adhesions in anti-IL-1β group was 22.6%, significantly lower than that of control group (78.3%). No incisional hernia was observed in abdominal wall in all cases.Conclusion:Intraperitoneal administration of IL-1β antibody might play important roles in inhibiting postoperative adhesion formation.
