Abstract
Objective To understand the happiness and quality of life of rural former paid blood donors affected with AIDS in Henan,analyze the relationship between happiness and quality of life,and discuss issues related with AIDS patients' well-being.Methods A descriptive cross-sectional design was used,and 94 AIDS patients with history of blood donation were selected from counties of Weishi,Zhenping and Tanghe in Henan province by using convenience sampling.The Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness(MUNSH)was used to measure subjective feeling of well-being,while the World Health Organization Quality of Life for HIV(WHOQOL-HIV BREF)Chinese version was used to measure the quality of life.Qualitative interviews and focus group discussions were conducted to investigate the care provided and the needs of the patients.Results Weishi county got the highest scores of happiness,followed by Zhenping county,and Tanghe county got the lowest scores.The difference in MUNSH scores among the three counties had statistical significance.MUNSH scores in Weishi and Zhenping counties were significantly different with those in Tanghe county,but the difference in MUNSH scores between Weishi and Zhenping counties were insignificant.The QOL scores were higher in Weishi(359.00±53.26)than in Zhenping(319.08±54.85)and Tanghe(248.24±61.20)There were significant differences(P0.01)in either area scores or total scores among the three counties.The impact factors on AIDS patients' happiness and quality of life included their individual health conditions and HIV serological status.The results of the interviews showed that the participants felt satisfied with their present living environment.Conclusion The main factors influencing AIDS patients' happiness are their health condition and the HIV serological status.Smiling face and ladder scale measurements are more effective in comparison with WHOQOL-HIV BREF and MUNSH.
