Abstract
The changes in length,relative water content(RWC),relative electrolyte leakage(REL) and spermidine content were investigated in coleoptile of two maize(Zea mays L.) cultivars,Nongda 108(drought-tolerant)and Yedan 13(drought-sensitive)under osmotic stress.On the 4th day,after polyethylene glycol(PEG)-6,000 treatment,REL of coleoptile of Yedan 13 increased more significantly than that of Nongda 108,while the Spd content in latter increased more significantly;Length and RWC of coleoptile of Yedan 13 decreased more significantly than that of Nongda 108.Under osmotic stress,treatment of seed-soaking with Spd resulted in the increases in length,RWC and Spd,in concert with an decrease in REL of coleoptile of Yedan 13.The results suggested that Spd seed-soaking could enhance growth and the tolerance of maize coleoptile,especially of the drought-sensitive cultivar,to osmotic stress,via increasing Spd contents in coleoptile.
