Abstract
The French Revolution and the Napoleonic era witnessed France's critical transition from old regime to modern society.During the quarter-century from the outbreak of the 1789 Revolution to the collapse of the Napoleonic empire, the French government promulgated multiple laws regarding the freedom of press,yet,most of which were poorly executed.At that time,two of the most prominent liberalists Benjamin Constant and Madame de Stael paid tremendous attention to the issue of freedom of speech,emphasizing that free press are the most significant method of constraining abuse of power.To delineate the evolution of French policies on freedom of the press will deepen our understanding of France's twisty road to media freedom.
