Abstract
Twenty samples from the Wangjiawan South and River sections (Yichang, China) have been processed for the chitinozoan microfossil group, in the light of the recent formal proposal of the Wangjiawan North section as the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Hirnantian Stage. The results from the preliminary study are not promising, but, awaiting further study, some provisional correlations can already be drawn, linking the (“stage 6”) middle part of the Wufeng Formation in the study area with the Ordochitina nevadensis and Nevadachitina vininica chitinozoan biozones as defined in the Vinini Creek (central Nevada) and the Cape Manning (Arctic Canada) sections.
