Abstract
Situation géographique 1Situé entre les contreforts du Minervois et la plaine narbonnaise, à une vingtaine de kilomètres au nord de Narbonne et à sept kilomètres de l'Aude, le site protohistorique de Mailhac est connecté au couloir audois, antique voie qui unissait l'Atlantique, la Garonne et la Méditerranée, et qui empruntait le seuil de Naurouze.2 C'est sur l'une des collines qui dominent l'agglomération actuelle que fut implanté, à la fin de l'âge du Bronze, un village dont l'étendue a été estimée à environ six hectares.Ce premier habitat a peut-être bénéficié d'un rempart (Louis, Maurice ; Taffanel, Odette ;Taffanel, Jean.1955.).Dans la plaine, d'autres installations domestiques ont été récemment découvertes : le village de la fin de l'âge du Bronze est donc bien plus étendu qu'il n'y paraissait auparavant.Le plateau du Cayla sera continuellement occupé jusqu'à l'époque romaine, sauf au VII e s. avant notre ère, période durant laquelle l'habitat est installé sur le piémont oriental du Cayla ainsi que dans les vallées et sur les reliefs collinaires sis à l'ouest. 3Cette vaste agglomération occupe ainsi plusieurs hectares et correspond désormais mieux à ce que l'on imaginait au regard de l'important cimetière du Grand Bassin I. Ce dernier, comme le cimetière, antérieur, du Moulin, est installé dans la dépression dominée par le Cayla et ceinturée par de petits reliefs.Les cimetières protohistoriques s'étendent donc sur plusieurs hectares dans la plaine mailhacoise.
