Abstract

Objective To investigate functional changes of peripheral blood antioxidative defense system after starvation. Methods Starvation was induced in rats by fasting. The peripheral blood GSH content,total SOD and GSHPx activities, MDA content,and plasma total antioxidant capacity were measured. Results After 10 d of starvation, plasma total antioxidant capacity, total SOD and GSHPx activities significantly decreased by 13.8%, 8.5%, 5.7% respectively in starvation group but did not decrease in normal control group. MDA content was also decreased. Blood GSH content was not significantly changed by 10 d starvation. Conclusion Starvation may induce damage to the function of antioxidative defense system in peripheral blood.
