Abstract
thesis focuses on the primary theme expressed by Magarette Laurence in her novel The Stone Angel. people in the small Canadian town Manawaka try to escape from the influence of their family, from their own sense of emptiness, from the merciless fate. But despite of their brave and moving efforts, they are doomed to fail. thesis also briefly discusses another theme of the novel--arrogance, which is closely linked to the proceeding theme. Hague's arrogant nature turns her life into a desert, which leads to her incompatibility with the people around her and to her unhappy marriage life.
