Abstract
There has been a serious asymmetry in Canadian-American economic relations, which results historically from three factors: former economic dependence in Canada's colonial age, dependence on the international market due to the natural-resource-export-orientated strategy for its industrialization, and demand on external capital for lack of primitive capital accumulation. Because of its own relative advantages in natural resources and market, Canada holds important influence and bargaining power in its interdependence relations with the U.S.; it can still insist on its economic autonomy in these relations. The establishment of the North American Free Trade Zone in the 1990s signals an obvious deepening of economic interdependence between the two countries. This is a way Canada chooses, but how to obtain its benefits while avoiding concurrent harms has still been a big challenge for itself.
