Abstract

First,the present situation of terminology work in China is reviewed. Next,the trends in terminology handling in Canada are briefed,with a short introduction to the Great Dictionary of Terminology in Canada. Among the proposals made by the author,the following points are emphasized greater resources be allocated to standardization of terms in basic sciences and descriptive terminology work in the fields of neology and humanities,for the latter of which establishment of a permanent institution is needed a free access dictionary of terminology be provided on the Web to meet the urgent need of users and a terminological forum be established on the Web to involve users in terminology work all through the way greater efforts be invested on the writing of definition,which is both the basis for building terminology systems and the most needed item for the users a comprehensive knowledge framework be built up using modern technology to facilitate better indexing and more efficient searching of information in the vast ocean of human knowledge,which,in structure,is a multidimensional network rather than a simple inverted tree as depicted in most classification schemes.
