Abstract

In this study the articles published by the forty-three information institutions in the U.S. between 2001 and 2011 and indexed by the EI database, together with their EI classification codes, were visually analyzed with the Self-Organizing Map(SOM) technique. The main research fields for each institution cluster were summarized. The findings reveal that nearly a half of institutions took computer software, data handling and application as their research foci, a quarter of institutions took information science as their research focus, one fifth of the institutions took computer peripheral equipment as their research focus, and only a few institutions took education or management as their research focus.
