Shell side flow pattern, flow resistence and heat transfer of shell and tube type exchangers with different shell side structures were systematically studied by experiments. These show that the shell side flow in case of straight segmental baffles exhibits a resistance because of the presence of stagnation zones, being also unfavourable for heat transmission. The Nussel number ( Nu ) of the shell side flow in case of helical baffles is higher than that of straight baffles. Moreover, the combination of helical baffles and a porous media results on a shell side convective heat transfer coefficients which are by 79.5% higher as compared with the use of straight baffles. Besides the optimal helical angle is found to be 40 and the optimal porosity of the media to be 0.985. Figs 9 and refs 6
