Abstract
L’entrée en guerre du Canada, aux côtés des alliés britanniques, en août 1914, soulève rapidement la question des ressortissants de nationalité ennemie vivant au pays. Vingt-quatre camps de détention sont alors érigés à travers le Canada pour incarcérer prisonniers et suspects. S’élevant près de la ville d’Amos en Abitibi, le camp de Spirit Lake ouvre en janvier 1915 et devient l’un des plus importants, avec plus de 1 200 prisonniers et près de 150 femmes et enfants. Une intervention archéologique sur ce camp a été réalisée dans le cadre d’un projet de mise en valeur. Elle a permis d’en évaluer le potentiel patrimonial, de mieux comprendre l’organisation spatiale de ce vaste complexe carcéral et d’appréhender son rôle dans la transformation du paysage.
