Objective To study the association between the level of plasma homocysteine(Hcy) and the cognitive dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease(PD).Methods Total 156 subjects were enrolled, including 50 unrelated healthy controls and 106 patients with PD. The basic information, disease situation and cognitive function of patients with PD were investigated and the plasma concentrations of Hcy, folic acid and vitamin B12 were detected in each subject. The relationship between plasma Hcy levels and the cognitive function was assessed.Results The plasma Hcy concentrations of cognitive dysfunction group were higher than those of normal cognitive group [(21.5±5.1)μmmol/L vs(14.7±4.7)μmmol/L, P 0.05] and there were no differences in plasma concentrations of folic acid and vitamin B12 among the groups. The scores of the Mini-mental state examination(MMSE) and Montreal cognitive assessment(MoCA) all showed significant correlations with plasma Hcy in patients with PD.Conclusion The elevated plasma Hcy level is significantly associated with the cognitive dysfunction.The increase of plasma Hcy maybe one of the main important risk factors of cognitive dysfunction in PD patients.
