Evaluation of SWAP-MANIMEA model for predicting NO_3~--N leaching from hog waste manured plots

Abstract
The modified Manurial Nitrogen Management:Environmental Aspects(MANIMEA) model was coupled with Soil-Water-Atmosphere-Plant(SWAP) model to simulate and evaluate the NO~-_3-N transport to subsurface drainage from hog waste manured plots.SWAP was used to simulate the vertical transport of water flow and heat,the outputs of the model were used as inputs of MANIMEA.The field data obtained in Truro,Nova Scotia,Canada,on 4 test plots were used to test the models.It was found that the predicted daily drainage flow was in good agreement with observed data and the daily NO~-_3-N losses was closely related to subsurface drainage.Total simulated NO~-_3-N losses for four plots were within-0.5% and 8.9% of observed values with correlation coefficient 0.64~0.74.The results showed that the model has the potential of predicting nitrate leaching.It can be forecasted that modified MANIMEA model would be an effective tool for predicting fate and transport of nitrogen from manured land.
