Reading from the Statistics: Demographic Characteristics of Recent Overseas Chinese in Canada

Abstract
The issue of overseas Chinese in Canada has been a focus within studies on immigration history. However, due to outdated data used for analysis, and a significant development and change of this particular group,existing studies have failed to provide an accurate description about characteristics of either recent overseas Chinese in Canada or social contexts where they are living. Using latest data from 2011 National Household Survey in Canada and other relevant reports by Statistics Canada,and in terms of rich historical materials,this paper attempts to give answer. Results show that despite their improvements in social status,economic condition,and cultural adaptation,recent overseas Chinese in Canada have still experienced structural barriers to social integration,which take on different manifestations from those suffered by early overseas Chinese in Canada,yet remain same in nature. The underlying reason for this is attributable to the revolving doorimmigration policy initiated by Canadian government in pursuit of state's interest. In this sense,this study attempts to provide empirical evidence for related studies and policy making in future.
