Abstract
The Shipping News,the second novel of America's contemporary female writer Annie Proulx,presents the readers a failure's process of salvation after his pilgrimage from the city to the wilderness Newfoundland.The novel contrasts the city with the Newfoundland in the aspect of ecological environment,in order to disclose the various hazards the industrialization has brought.Based on Arne Naess's theory of deep ecology,especially such essential terms as gestalt ontology,biospherical egalitarianism,and Self-realization,this article intends to probe into the ecological ideas embedded in the novel as well as to explore the prospects of the human-nature relationship.
