Variation and Management of Groundwater and Soil Moisture in Agricultural Area with shallow water table

Abstract
Yucheng county is located in an alluvial plain of the Yellow River, where a shallow groundwater table is prevailing in agricultural area, and water exchanges between groundwater and soil moisture occur frequently and intensively. Effective use of groundwater and soil water is a key countermeasure for sustainable development of water saving agriculture and water resources utilization in Yucheng. This paper analyzed the changing characteristics of groundwater and soil moisture resources during the 1998 1999 growing season of winter wheat, from October of 1998 to June of 1999. The results showed that a significant proportion of crop evapotranspiration was met with groundwater. However, the water table contribution was not offen considered in the present irrigation scheduling system, which leads to heavy deep seepage. Several countermeasures for improving crop water use efficiency were put forward in the paper.
