Effects of nitrogen application pattern,including different time and ratio,on starch formation and grain yield of strong gluten wheat cultivar Wanmai38 were studied under the condition of 180 kg/hm~2 nitrogen application from 1999 to 2001. The results showed that as the N top dressing delayed,amylose,amylopectin and total starch contents in grains reduced,but their accumulating amount and rate increased;soluble sugar and sucrose contents in flag leaves rose,but declined in grains. Peak viscosity of flour also increased. The nitrogen application pattern of 30% as basic fertilizer,10% dressing in 5th leaf stage,and two 30% dressing at leaf-remainder 2.5 and 0.5 time respectively was optimum for the improvement of yield and quality in wheat.
