AEROBIC DEGRADATION OF SULFAMETHOXAZOLE AND TRIMETHOPRIM AND EFFECT ON MICROBIAL RESPIRATION IN SOILS

Abstract
In this study,the degradation of antibiotics under aerobic conditions in three different soils with and without manure addition was investigated.The effect on microbial respiration in soils was also investigated using substrate-induced respiration.The results showed that manure addition slightly accelerated aerobic degradation of sulfamethoxazole in the first 20 days.Sulfamethoxazole was degraded rapidly mainly through microbial degradation,while trimethoprim was more persistent under aerobic conditions.Obvious respiration suppression by these antibiotics occurred in the first 2 days compared to control soils,but a quick recovery appeared later.There was no significant concentration-dependent inhibition on the total mineralization of soils after spiking with sulfamethoxazole or sulfamethoxazole combined with trimethoprim after 100 days,indicating no influence on microbial respiration regardless of the antibiotic concentrations,single compound or mixture added in soils.
