Abstract

Sustainable development has become a primary objective for many countries throughout the world. However, it's difficult to measure sustainability. The ecological footprint, which was developed by William and Wackernagel, Canadian economists, has become more and more popular for its easiness and convenience. The conception, connotation and calculation of the ecological footprint were introduced in this paper. The ecological footprints of some countries were used to explain the sustainability of world development nowadays.The advantages and disadvantages of this method were summarized based on some experts' opinions. The progress and development trends of ecological footprint were introduced as well.
