Les annonces de journaux ont depuis longtemps servi de ressources principales pour les historiens qui s'intéressent au cinéma des premiers temps à Montréal. Mais on a rarement étudié les stratégies discursives de ces textes jounalistiques. Ces stratégies reflètent, entre autres, les limites de l'industrie cinématographique de l'époque, la compétition entre le cinéma et le théâtre, et les tensions culturelles qui ont résulté de la croissance économique et démographique de la ville. Cet article porte un regard analytique sur les annonces parues dans l'un des plus importants journaux francophones montréalais au cours des années qui allaient mener à l'établissement des premiers palais du cinéma.
